Ilyumzhinov removed from council list.

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has been removed from a list of SportAccord Council members published on the .sport domain applicant’s website. It appears he was replaced by another member.

Domain Name Wire published a story last month about how Ilyumzhinov was listed on the U.S. Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons list for assisting the Government of Syria. The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) added him to the list in November.

Ilyumzhinov was a member of SportAccord’s council, a sort of executive board for the group.

It would seemingly be a violation for ICANN to enter into a contract with a new top level domain applicant when one of its executive members was on the OFAC list.

I can’t find any mention of Ilyumzhinov being removed from the group’s council, other than his removal from the website. However, there is some press about a new addition to the council, Jose Perurena. He seems to be a replacement for Ilyumzhinov, representing the Associate Members.
